Rodney Hanners will step down as CEO after six years leading the Los Angeles-based health system. Steven Shapiro, MD, USC's senior vice president for health affairs, will take on direct operational responsibility for Keck Medicine as CEO while continuing to oversee the Keck School of Medicine of USC; his title will change to executive vice president. Dr. Shapiro joined USC in 2021 after serving as president of UPMC, where he oversaw 42 hospitals, according to the report. Oversight of USC's dentistry, gerontology, pharmacy and social work schools will shift to the university's provost.

Two other Keck Medicine executives take on expanded roles. Marty Sargeant will become COO of Keck Medicine while remaining CEO of Keck Medical Center of USC, and David Peng, MD, USC's chief clinical officer, will also become deputy executive vice president for health affairs.

At the Keck School of Medicine, Carolyn Meltzer, MD, will step down as dean after more than four years to become president of the Radiological Society of North America, remaining a tenured faculty member. Vassilios Papadopoulos, PharmD, DPharm, will serve as interim dean while continuing to lead the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. USC President Beong-Soo Kim said combining Dr. Shapiro's operational responsibility for Keck Medicine with his oversight of the medical school is intended to help the organization move more quickly to expand clinical care and research across the region.
